THE CLASS OF '71

When was it? March? April? I can't remember.

I remember the trip in the back of the Bedford. Someone said to me, "What did they bust you for?" I said I hadn't been bust for anything. They all laughed. I said I was a clerk. I was being posted to a new base on the border.

I had a bad feeling.

Where are you now Zyn Dry?

Janks?

Foxy Norton?

Answer me dammit.

I was there for 7 months in 1970? I remember I was there when Hendrix died.I went straight from Grahamstown and had no contact with Levin apart from "group therapy " sessions.Just finished reading Gordon Torr's book.Like to refresh my hazy memories.Remember carrying tar poles a fair distance.Remember the dogs name as being
Konkles because of his misshapen tail.Remember peeing in 3 countries in under 5 minutes.Remember Johnny Heyes going missing and searching for him on the dry Limpopo bed.I think I was in the 2nd bungalow on the right[coming in the entrance]I remember a visit by PW Botha,Minister of Defence at the time.I remember smoking on the back of Bedford before loading river sand[for a neighbouring farmer?]Does anybody have similar memories? I think that place planted a love of nature in me and would like to see the area again.I do not discount anybodys negative experiences.I had no contact with Ward 11 and 1Mil.I think I got lucky.I think the management might have been tired of "breaking'" the manne by the time I got there.I think I got off lightly....Any memories from that time? Neil Levy.
